The cook at the table
Hello, I'm Della
I write Golden Hearth from a small flat kitchen with a temperamental oven and a window that gets exactly one good hour of afternoon light. It's where I test everything you read here — usually twice, sometimes ten times, always for real dinners.

I didn't grow up in a food family, exactly. I grew up in a family that ate together — every night, no phones, whatever was cheap and in season stretched to feed five. My mother could turn a bag of lentils and a wilting bunch of chard into something you'd remember, and I've spent most of my adult life quietly trying to earn that same magic.
This blog started as a way to write down the recipes before I forgot them. It's grown into something bigger, but the heart hasn't changed: unfussy home cooking that respects your time, your budget, and the fact that dinner still has to happen even on the hard days.
I'm not here to make you a better cook. I'm here to make you a braver one.
Every recipe here has been cooked in a real home kitchen, on ordinary equipment, with ingredients you can actually find. If a technique isn't worth the trouble, I'll tell you. If a shortcut works, it's already in the method. No gatekeeping, no twelve-dollar finishing salts — just the honest version.
How I cook
01
Season first, always
I shop the market before I plan the week. The best meals start with whatever looked good on Saturday morning, not a list written on Monday.
02
Fewer, better things
Good salt, real butter, a bottle of olive oil you'd drink, and time. Most of what makes food taste expensive is just patience.
03
Taste as you go
A recipe is a map, not a contract. Your salt, your stove, and your palate all get a vote — so keep a spoon within reach.
Always in my pantry
If you stock these, you're never more than half an hour from a proper dinner. Everything on this blog leans on some corner of this list.
- Flaky sea salt & a pepper mill
- Daily
- Tinned tomatoes & dried beans
- Backbone
- Good olive oil & a knob of butter
- Fat
- Anchovies, capers & a lemon
- Spark

Letters from the kitchen
A recipe and a short note every Friday. It's the closest thing I have to cooking for you in person.
